The Voice Semi-Finals!

April 30, 2012

I have been watching The Voice ever since the beginning of last season. We are now in the semi-finals of season two. For those who don’t watch it, the show has a really cool concept. At the beginning when each artists sing for the four mentors/ team leaders (Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton) the four can’t see what they look like! This way, the artists are only being picked by their vocal ability and not on how they look. This season each team had 12 artists on it, and now they are down to the final two on each team. The mentors will give each artist a rating and everyone can vote from home (online, by phone or by buying the songs on itunes) and tomorrow night they will announce which one person from each team will go to the finals next week. When the winner is announced, they get a record deal and the title of The Voice.

Last season, a member of Adam’s team won (Yay!), who I had been rooting for. This year, I am rooting for another member of Adam’s team, Tony Lucca, who used to be in the Mickey Mouse Club with Christina. There are some other really good singers on the show, but my favourite is Tony! I really hope he wins! Does anyone else watch the show? Who is your favourite?

Pretty beautiful, right?

Four on the Floor

April 28, 2012

Last night I went to see my friends’ band The Little Black Dress. They were playing at Rivoli (Toronto) for their album release party. I did a review of their new Album Spotlight a few weeks ago, so go and read it if you haven’t done so already: https://blonderobyngirl.wordpress.com/2012/04/08/spotlight/

Last night they played every song from their album with tons of energy and smiles, and I have to say that they did a fantastic job. I am incredibly proud of them for all they have accomplished and it is really nice for me to be able to see them grow as musicians. I started watching them play about a year and a half ago (in October 2010). In that time, they have expanded their fanbase, written more songs, and created an awesome album. They’ve also somehow become more talented (never saw that coming) and they’ve made live performances even more fun than before. I love to see people that I care about loving what they do, which is exactly what The Little Black Dress does. You can tell by watching them on stage that they are completely in their element and love what they do, which makes me happier than you could ever understand.

I really care about this band and their music, as you have probably read in my past posts. Since I also care about all of my readers (thank you all so much by the way) I would love for you all to check out this band. They have rock songs, pop/ dance songs and classic rock n roll. One thing you can do is watch a video I took last night of them performing their song Four on the Floor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGwJ9oiSWxg&list=HL1335655441&feature=mh_lolz

One last thing I would like to mention is to the band (as I hope you all read this): I want you to know each of you are so talented, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You bring joy to every person you play for and it’s not that often that I find a band who can do that. I want to thank each of you for all of the smiles, laughs and good times you have given me whenever I see you play, and I know there will be more good times in the future. For Brian, Damian and Lewis: I don’t really know you guys, but always know you have a fan who will always support you no matter what (and next time you see me at a show please come say hi!). For Dan and Kyle: thank you for all of the hugs (sweaty or otherwise), smiles, thank yous, set lists, kind words and silly messages. Everytime I see you guys it brings a smile to my face and makes my day better. I hope you guys know that you are both my friends and I love you both so much!

Everyone, go check out The Little Black Dress 🙂

Fears

April 27, 2012

Everybody is afraid of something. Whether we like to admit it or not, we all have a fear of something. My mom, my sister and one of my best friends are absolutely horrified by spiders (Arachnophobia). Both of my dads are afraid of heights (Acrophobia), although one is much more afraid of heights than the other. My grandpa and my other best friend (not the one afraid of spiders) are afraid of snakes (Ophidiophobia). There are many other fears such as fear of death, fear of fire, fear of the dark, fear of clowns, fear of needles and fear of germs. For an entire list of fears, check out: http://phobialist.com/ I’m sure every fear, if not most of them, are probably on there.

Since I am writing about fears, I thought I would tell you mine (just don’t make fun of me!). My main fears are:

Fear of Snakes: Ophidiophobia- This would be my major one. I can’t even see pictures of snakes without flipping out.

Fear of Heights: Acrophobia- I have trouble going on some roller coasters because of this, and I also can’t go on ladders or the roof or anything like that, although that also has to do with the fact I sometimes suffer from vertigo. I can fly though, which doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Fear of Seaweed (not sure of a scientific name for this)- I know this one is weird, but I really freak out when I’m swimming and seaweed touches me. I think why it scared me is because I’m afraid that its a snake touching me, because I’m so scared of snakes.

Fear of Open Spaces: (Agoraphobia)- Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I’m afraid to go outside. My problem is when there is a lot of empty space around me, such as in a movie theatre when I sit in the aisle seat, or if I sit in a chair that doesn’t have a wall or something behind it. This one isn’t too bad for me, I’m better than I used to be but it still bothers me. I guess it’s because I’m afraid of someone going into that empty space that I don’t know and who could harm me in some way. It’s very difficult to explain, but I’m pretty sure that it has to do with how I find it incredibly difficult to trust people and let them in emotionally. It could also be the fact that I really don’t like certain people touching me.

When I was a kid, I was afraid of dogs. Obviously I’m not anymore though because my family has two dogs who I love very much! I’m also not a big fan of the dark. I’m not afraid of it, but I have bad night vision so it’s difficult for me to see in the dark, therefore I don’t like it all that much. Oh, and I really don’t like germs, more than most people I think. I don’t have a fear of them though.

So, now that you know all about me and my fears (which nobody is allowed to hold against me!), you should tell me yours. Sometimes its good to just get things out in the open.

The Cabin in the Woods

April 26, 2012

The Cabin in the Woods just came out in theatres on Friday April 13th. It stars Kristen Connolly (Mona Lisa Smile, The Happening), Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Star Trek), Anna Hutchison (Power Rangers- tv series), Richard Jenkins (Me, Myself and Irene, Burn After Reading), Bradley Whitford (Billy Madison, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants) and Amy Acker (Angel- tv series). The Cabin in the Woods is about five friends who go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they end up getting much more than they bargained for. Together, they try to survive and discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

I went to see it on Tuesday with my cousin, as I had been wanting to see the movie for quite a while. One of the co-writers is Joss Whedon, who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer (one of my favourite shows), so I was really looking forward to seeing it. The movie started off well, with an introduction to the five friends, as well as a bit of mystery. As the plot developed, I found I was enjoying the movie and was able to follow along. There are some parts of the movie which really make you wonder what on earth is going on, but once the movie comes to an end you will understand everything. I don’t want to give too much of the movie away, but the ending definitely surprised me. They did a good job of answering all questions the audience will have, and anyone who enjoys gore will like the ending. They also did a good job with including a lot of suspense, as well as some well timed comical moments.

There were a few moments in the movie that I didn’t particularly find enjoyable though. The last scene was definitely one of those moments, which sucks because every movie should have a strong ending, whereas this one had a good ending up until the last scene.

For a horror/ thriller, I think I would give this movie a 7 out of 10. I did enjoy it for the most part, although it was strange, but the last scene was not good. If it had been good, I probably would have rated it a 8 or 8.5 out of 10.

Definitely a bit of an odd movie, but if you enjoy odd horrors/ thrillers, go out and see it!
